One of the first things that people ask when they first get glasses is whether or not wearing them is going to make their eyes better. The short answer to this question is no. Glasses are just lenses that are put in place to compensate for what your eyes can’t see normally. The only time that glasses can help improve a person’s eyes is when that person is a child who is wearing them for crossed eyes. The glasses help focus the wandering eye of the child and this action becomes automatic over time.
There are a lot of common misconceptions about glasses and your eyes. Some people still think that wearing someone else’s glasses can damage your eyes. Doctors say this isn’t actually true. The only thing that wearing someone else’s glasses actually does to you is to give you a headache when your eyes are straining to see through lenses that aren’t designed for them. People just assume that headaches are a symptom of worsening vision. Some times after have a surgery procedure like ah a New York rhinoplasty specialist your eyes can seem blurry so you may need to make sure that you are ok and if not you may need to see a eye doctor.
So we’ve established that wearing glasses isn’t going to make your eyes better. It improves your vision, but that doesn’t mean your eyes are getting better. In fact, if you take off the glasses you will find yourself right back where you started. Some eye doctors suggest that wearing glasses actually weakens the eye, because the eye gets used to looking at things through your corrective lenses. But for some of us, glasses are necessary so that we can see where we are going in this world around us.
This doesn’t mean there is nothing you can do to make your eyes better. Sometimes surgery can correct eye problems without glasses being needed. Everyone has heard of the famous laser surgery that helps improve vision without using glasses. But not everyone can afford laser surgery, so what are the rest of us supposed to do? Well there are some exercises you can do with your eyes to help make them better. Yes it sounds crazy, whoever heard of exercising your eyes? But the eyes have muscles, and those muscles need to be exercised if you want to see (no pun intended) any improvement.
One of the best things you can do for your eyes is blink. That’s right, it sounds too simple to work right? Well here’s what blinking does for you. It helps clear away anything that might get in your eyes, like dust, dirt and whatever else may be blowing in the wind. Blinking also helps rest the eyes, even if it is just for seconds at a time. People who go too long without blinking can find themselves getting headaches from eye fatigue.
It happens a lot especially if you spend a lot of time in front of the computer or in front of the television. You tend to focus on what you’re doing and you forget to blink. This exercise is most effective if you put aside some time every few hours to just sit and blink. This doesn’t have to be fast, three to four times every five minutes should be helpful.
Doctors also suggest that making sure you partake in a balanced diet can contribute to the health of your eyes. All those green things that are so good for you are actually great for your eyes as well. They contain things like Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and Vitamin E, which are all essential vitamins that most people don’t get nearly enough of. Fruits are also good for the same reasons. Adding fish to your diet can also help give you nutrients you might not be getting.
There are many more things you can do to help keep your eyes healthy, but we didn’t have room to write about them all. Protect your eyes, wear goggles when participating in contact sports, eat the right foods, and remember to blink every once in awhile. Your eyes will thank you for it.
